Team Building (High-Performing Teams Essentials)
Team building has an image problem, largely earned by a decade of activities that were enjoyable on the day and changed nothing on Monday. This is a working session instead. It uses structured activity, but each one exists to surface something about how this particular team actually operates, and the day ends with agreements the team writes for itself rather than a set of general principles nobody applies.
Programme Agenda
What Separates a Team From a Group
Shared goal, interdependence and mutual accountability. Why many workplace teams are actually groups of individuals reporting to the same manager, and why that distinction explains most of the friction.
Trust as a Working Condition
Trust in the practical sense: whether people admit a mistake early, ask for help, and say they do not know. Building it through disclosure rather than through activities, and what erodes it fastest.
Disagreeing Productively
Teams that never argue are usually avoiding rather than aligned. Separating the issue from the person, surfacing the objection people are holding back, and the manager behaviour that makes disagreement safe.
Commitment After the Decision
The difference between consensus and commitment, why people need to be heard rather than to get their way, and closing a decision explicitly so it does not get relitigated in corridors.
Peer Accountability
The hardest of the four: colleagues holding each other to what was agreed without escalating to the manager every time. Direct, low-drama accountability conversations, practised.
Communication and Working Styles
How different working styles read to each other, and the predictable friction between them. Adjusting approach without asking anyone to become somebody else.
Team Norms
The agreements that actually matter: meeting behaviour, response times, decision rights, how disagreement is raised, and how workload pressure is flagged. Written by the team, in specific terms.
When a Team Has Broken Down
Diagnosing whether the problem is structure, workload, a specific relationship or leadership. What can be repaired in the room and what needs a different intervention, said honestly.
Learning Outcomes:
Distinguish a real team from a group and diagnose which you have
Build the kind of trust that makes people admit problems early
Surface and handle disagreement without it becoming personal
Close a decision so it commits people rather than merely ending debate
Hold a peer accountable directly without escalating
Adjust to different working styles without asking anyone to change
Write specific team norms the team will actually apply
Recognise when a breakdown needs more than a workshop
